DIONDRE'SATHLETIC LEGACY
Diondre’s athletic journey began at just 10 years old, when he first took to the field with his older brother, Darrius Overton, in Pop Warner football in Greenville, NC. While football was his introduction to competitive sports, his passion quickly expanded into basketball, where he excelled as a point guard for the Greenville Recreation League. His skill, vision, and ball-handling ability set him apart early, and he continued to sharpen his game during three years with the Wilson Blue Devils AAU program.
After his family relocated to Greensboro, NC, Diondre spent a season with CP3 before joining the Karolina Diamonds, where he was mentored by Coach Kevin Graves. As a freshman at Southeast Guilford High School, he immediately impressed as a standout point guard. The following year, after transferring to Walter Hines Page High School, he solidified his reputation as a star on the court throughout his remaining high school career.
During his sophomore year, Diondre’s parents encouraged him to return to football to further strengthen his grit and toughness. He embraced the challenge wholeheartedly, becoming a dominant two-sport athlete. On the football field, he excelled as both a wide receiver and defensive back. By his junior year, he averaged 14.6 points per game in basketball while recording 31 catches for 577 yards in football. His senior year was even more impressive—78 receptions for 1,251 yards and 15 touchdowns—earning him recognition as the No. 4 overall prospect in North Carolina by 247 Sports. Highly recruited, he ultimately committed to Clemson University over offers from NC State, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
At Clemson, Diondre quickly proved himself. As a freshman in 2016, he scored a touchdown on his very first career reception. In 2017, he appeared in 14 games, posting 14 receptions for 178 yards. His 2018 season included 14 catches for 199 yards and three touchdowns, highlighted by a spectacular play that earned him a spot on Randy Moss’s “You Got Mossed” feature on ESPN.
His senior season in 2019 was his strongest, with 22 receptions for 352 yards and three touchdowns, including five starts in 15 games. Voted team captain and honored as an Academic All-ACC selection, Diondre balanced excellence on and off the field. One of his career highlights came against Boston College, where he tied a school record with three touchdown receptions and set a career-high with 119 yards. Scoring on all three of his catches, he earned Team Offensive Player of the Game, ACC Receiver of the Week, the Leather Helmet Award from the Boston College Gridiron Club, and the O’Rourke/McFadden Trophy as game MVP.
Over his Clemson career, Diondre was part of two National Championship teams (2016, 2018) and finished with 52 receptions for 777 yards and seven touchdowns. More than the numbers, his legacy was defined by his perseverance, leadership, and the joy he brought to the game. From a young athlete in Greenville to a celebrated Clemson Tiger, Diondre’s journey reflected not only his talent but also his unwavering spirit and determination.
